LINN O’CARROLL - WORKSHOPS RESIDENCIES COMMISSIONS

Linn is currently taking bookings for 2006, so if  you would like to work with Linn in 2006 why not get in touch soon?

Linn’s projects during 2004 are outlined below

Made-In Flight - Larmer Tree Festival July 04
Linn co-led the Made-In Flight workshop at the festival where, together with a team of volunteers and children, a 30ft willow Zeppelin was created over 3 days which was then decorated before being paraded through the gardens. Linn would like to thank all the kind people who contributed over the weekend to create such an amazing structure and made it so much fun!.  Many thanks to Mark and Anna who kindly supplied the images, click here to see some more.

Groundworks - Hale Primary School July - November 04
Hale Primary School were awarded the maximum ‘Awards for All’ lottery grant for Linn together with Mark Nobes, a local engineer, to work with the pupils at the school. The pupils designed and produced two huge panels depicting the New Forest stage to act as a screen for the portacabin classrooms. For more images click here.
The second stage of the project commenced in September when pupils from Key Stage 1 will produce two unique oak benches, both will use routed drawings of insects and leaves made by the children.
One of the benches will be inscribed with words about friendship, and the other will be an unusual bench set around a beautiful mature holly tree in the playground. For images from the project

Salisbury District Council - Schools Environmental Day July 04
SDC Environmental Officer asked Linn to lead two short workshops at the City Hall.  Together with the pupils from two Salisbury schools Linn made willow mini-beasts which the children were able to take home at the end on their session.

Fordingbridge Infants School ‘Push and Pull’ May - July 04
This seven week project kicked off in May with a slide presentation of Craft Council artists who use recycling in their work.  Fifty eight pupils from year one were introduced to weaving. Half the group explored traditional loom hand weaving with fabrics, wools and unusual materials. The other half experimented with barrier fencing and constructing more contemporary pieces with plastics and new materials. All the materials were sourced from the Southampton Scrap Store, Fordingbridge charity shops, pupils and teachers. For more images from the workshop please click here.

Wellow Primary School  June 04
How lucky are the pupils at Wellow to have a glade in their school grounds? This was an ideal space for an   exhibition of willow sculptures produced by the pupils for their environmental week.  Linn introduced herself and her work to the pupils at their assembly, and then worked with year 3 and some year 4 pupils to produce work based on the theme of naturally occurring shapes and forms such as seed heads, leaves cones etc.  To see some images from the workshop click here.

Mill Down First School, Blandford  June 04
Having completed an art workshop in February to  produce a pair of large scale hangings for the school hall.  Linn returned during the school’s art week to lead a two day arts residency in which the pupils produced a ‘swarm’ of mini beasts and some extraordinary sunfowers!  To see some more images please click here.

Forres Sandle Manor - June 04
Linn was invited back to Forres Sandle Manor by Fay Eflord, Head of Art to create a throne for the school having seen the thrones Linn made with Morgans Vale Primary School, that were exhibited at Salisbury Museum. A large cedar tree which was felled 2 years ago provided an ideal base for the throne.  During an introduction evening workshop a selection of pupils produced a series of finials for the throne, having first been introduced to Linn’s paintings and ‘seed head’ collection to inspire a creative, exciting reaction to working with clay and pottery tools. During the 2 day workshop Linn worked with all the year 7 pupils introducing them to weaving with willow and recycled telecommunications wiring. The finished throne will be sited outside the Arts Department. In addition to the throne Linn also made a ‘medicine wheel’ with the year three pupils which is also sited in the school grounds. From Pulp to Paper - Downton Secondary School June 04
Lynn Sykes, Head of Art at Downton Secondary School met Linn 2 years ago whilst she was delivering a project at Hale Primary School.  She invited Linn to be the first person to work within the brand new ‘state of the art’ Art and Design Classroom with year 7. The theme chosen for the project was “landscape”, and themes of Farmland, the river, landscape and textiles were used. The pupils had collected natural ephemera to incorporate and embed within their handmade paper pieces.  The pupils were asked to treat the subject in an abstract way.  Here is some more images from the workshop. Linn hopes to return in the Autumn to work with Year 10.

Fault Lines - 2 day workshop for Salisbury Festival June 04
All the participants were practicising artists, some of whom are looking to pursue higher education and take their skills into the participatory arts arena. Linn demonstrated and discussed all the stages of paper-making and casting.  Each artist produced individual pieces using objects they bought to the session, and casts were also taken from the floor of St Thomas’s Church floor, to pick up the fault and fracture lines from the ancient slate and limestone flooring.  All participants contributed to a piece that will be submitted to the In Praise of Earth project. April and May 2004 - Winterslow Primary School
As part of the ‘In Praise of Earth’ project with the Salisbury Festival (2004/05) Linn worked with the Winterslow school pupils.  In the first stage of the residency Linn asked the students to collect and bring in ‘fragments’ from their gardens, walks and surrounding area. They spent the day creating paper casts of the objects using cotton linters. Linn returned to the school in May to work with the pupils to introduce pigments and wax to the casts to complete the paper sculptures.  For images from April click here, and for images from the second workshop in which pigment and wax were introduced to the work click here

May 2004 - Stratford Sub-Castle Primary School
Linn, together with Martin Gilchrist (a Wiltshire Wildlife Ranger) and a selection of pupils from all years, have constructed a ‘snail’ bench designed by the pupils made from oak sleepers. .
Pupils produced the initial drawings, and over a days workshop, helped shape and construct the bench. The spiral design of the snail shell was routed and embedded with wire from a chandlery. The snails feelers / eyes were forged by a Salisbury blacksmith and the leaf designs on the sides of the bench have been routed and painted.

The Sarum St Pauls bench has been sited at the Avon Valley Reserve.  The Woodlands First School and Stratford-Sub-Castle benches will be sited within the next month or so.

April 2004 - Wilton Rotary Club
Who says artists don’t get wined and dined? - Wilton Rotary Club very generously gave up their evening to invite Linn to run a workshop for 25 members at the Salisbury Racecourse. After drinks and supper the gentlemen all had a go at ceramic painting.  The theme ‘a dog is not just for Christmas’ fitted in to the Winter theme.  The session was great fun and all the members produced a mug, which Linn has fired ready for use. To see some real mugs click here.

All the work focussing on all the seasons produced by the Wilton groups has been photographed in Linn’s studio to be included in a brochure produced by Wiltshire County Council promoting and looking at community inclusion and policies relating to this.

April 2004 - Pre-School ‘Summer-Bugs Project’
Linn met the pupils and worked with the staff of a pre-school West of Salisbury. The ‘Summer’ theme tied in beautifully with the children constructing and collaging mini-beasts from pipe-cleaners, tissue paper, glitter etc... The results were wonderful and colourful, with the children really enjoying the project.  For more images click here.

April 2004 - Countryside Unit, Barford St. Martin, Wilton
Linn spent the day with the Countryside Unit at Barford St. Martin leading a paper-making workshop. Participants produced work based on the theme of Autumn.

March 2004 - Wilton First Primary School
Wiltshire County Council invited Linn to run a series of “Four Seasons” participatory workshops within Wilton, with Wilton First Primary School kicking off the project.  “Spring” was our theme, and pupils from Reception to Year 4 used recycled plastics from the scrap scheme to produce a pair of banners for the school reception area. Linn will be continuing the project through April and May working with the Countryside Unit (Alabare Charity), The Rotary Club, and finally a Pre-School, West of Salisbury.

February 2004 - Mildown First School, Blandford, Dorset
Linn was invited to work with Mildown First Primary School to produce a pair of hangings using recycled materials, provided by the pupils. the Southampton Scrap Scheme and the Puddletown Scrap Scheme.  The constructed pieces were made entirely of plastics so that they may be sited outside in the school grounds.

2003/04 Benches for Avon Valley Wildlife Reserve
Linn joined forces with Wiltshire Wildlife Ranger Martin Gilchrist and three Salisbury primary schools to produce a set of benches for the Avon Valley local nature reserve in Salisbury. The pupils have produced their bench designs that Martin and Linn will be building. The work has been sited within the Avon Valley Nature Reserve, Salisbury.
